In the early 1980s Geoff Taylor discovered the large annual aggregation of whale sharks at Ningaloo and did the preliminary research that showed this was related to the annual Reef Spawning. His ongoing research established the Photoidentification of whale sharks and identified the principal species on which they prey. He also identified the coastal Ningaloo Current that is important to understanding the Ningaloo Reef system.
